Christian Fellowship Camp

I was never a fan of Christian Fellowship (CF) Camp, well, not until I’ve actually joined one. I changed my mind about it and I think I’ll join them every year and keep my finger crossed that the camp will be fun. My first CF Camp was just a week ago – 1st of June. It’s a 2 days 1 night camp, but I would definitely like it if they could make it 3 days 2 nights. When I was packing my bag for this camp the night before, I was like “what? That’s all?” because the camps I usually go are either camps to earn badge or just some plain torture camp, and all these sorts of camp needs a lot of things like parang, and all those stuffs, but for CF camp, things just aren’t the same, just a few clothes, toiletries, and shoes. You don’t even have to being your own eating utensils. The fee is RM 55 if I remember correctly, quite expensive, but it’s worthwhile.

I arrived at school about 8 or so, most of everyone is a stranger to me, because I’ve never joined a CF camp, and ultimately, I wasn’t a member. Only a few I know including Clement, John, Stephen, Chee Jong, Ru Yen, etc. etc. I didn’t have anything much to do there, just a little eager to depart for the camp, I don’t really recall being taken into attendance, but guess I couldn’t bother much, we headed for the bus later and departed towards Port Dickson. I can’t really remember how it was in the bus, I only know that Chee Jong is doing some great attempt and me and a few pals are teasing him. He had a new phone, which was kind of okay to me but it’s what the content inside that gave us a few more ideas just to tease on him.

We reached The National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) after 30 minutes or so. What a name it has, because for gamers, it just sounds too similar to noob, which means a newbie. Anyway, we got there and John and Stephen divided us into groups, and were briefed about the camp’s rules which include all the basic rules like no littering and so on, and so, we proceeded to our dorms, and my dorm’s air conditioner works perfectly fine, it was much cooler compared to the other dorm. There are 10 beds – 5 double deckers – that didn’t have anything on them, we’re required to help ourselves, but I got so lazy, I just spread the bed sheet over the bed without even tucking the sides under the bed.

We headed down for our first activity – the icebreaking, which is the basic for all camps if you’re even bothered to know each other, it wasn’t really effective, even I myself just stick to the people I know. It was a rock-paper-scissors game. I’m not going to brief too much on games because it’ll eat up a page or two if I go into detail. We also had the, bomb-the-other-country and fold-your-paper-airplane-and-hit-your-opponent game, followed by the pass-the-paper-round-in-rhythm game. We had lunch a continued with Pastor Phillip’s session. We had a balloon game which is similar to volleyball, and I keep tumbling over saving a few balls but as I recall, all of them are fruitless. Next is the build-the-tallest tower game, which we came in second. I was quite entertained by the activities anyway, their unique and something that are rarely played. (Or I rarely went for any camps)

Next, we had a few beach games including the hold-a-stick-upright-without-touching-it, use-your-hand-to-fill-the- bottle and the squeeze-the-water-from-your-hair-to-the-bottle game. Holding the stick upright is a little tricky game, each group member has to hold the strings that are tied to the top and the bottom of the stick, and mind you, it’s no small stick, at least as tall as you. It requires a lot of coordination and teamwork, and for the squeeze-the-water-from-your-hair-to-the-bottle game, of course girls have more advantage because their hair are freaking long, and my hair is like… 1 inch? And next comes the free time, where I had the most fun tripping people over and taking down people into the sea, sort of like wrestling, but with a few combinations of self defense skills which I saw on TV that worked most of the time. I apologize to those who are offended and those who are hurt and I hope that you don’t mind because I was just playing around.

During the night, we had a talk by Pastor Phillip yet again, and we reflected what we did during the activities and what we learned from them. His talks are very much interesting and I didn’t manage to fall asleep. The talk summed as:
1. Self Discipline
• The ability to do what is right even when you don’t feel like it.
2. Core Values
• Principle you live by that enable you to take a moral stand.
3. Sense of Identity
• A healthy, realistic self-image-based on who God made you to be.
4. Emotional Security
• Your emotional health that enables you to be stable and consistent.

After the talk, we headed back to our dorm to sleep, but there are a few people who are playing badminton in the freaking dorm, and I felt sorry for Pastor Phillip because what he taught (self discipline) didn’t work into these young men’s mind, and the worst is yet to come, because shortly after they’ve stopped and the lights were off, some inconsiderate stranger who live beside us are making so much noise I could barely sleep, but I made it through the night somehow.

The second day, we were promised another beach trip but was canceled because time didn’t allow it. I was sort of disappointed because I didn’t get another go at wrestling, we had devotion instead, and we had this session by Aunt Pek Leng, just like another pastor (doesn’t mean she is one) she gave a passage from the bible and had a few mini games with us, and whoever that gets a right answer when questioned will get a candy and so forth.

In the end, there was prize giving ceremony to those who won the most games from the first day till the second. My group came in the first, which I’m happy of, because my member (ahem*, I was the group leader) had great teamwork among ourselves and cooperation is very much shown in each and every one of us. My group consists of Clement as the supervisor, I as the group leader, Qing Hang, Elizabeth, Ru Yi, Laura, Anne Grace, and 2 very quiet girls – Gillian and Eleanor. I’m sorry if anyone is left out, but I think that is all, 9 members. I shared out our “bounty” on the bus, and we passed snacks all around the bus until nobody wants it anymore. We reached at school around 1 and went back to our own home soon after.

I felt that this camp have allowed me to learn more about protestants, cause I myself is a catholic. I also had a lot of fun while it lasted, it was a great experience and I look forward for more camps like these.

Check out Ru Yen’s blog about CF camp here!

Here are the pictures that will explain most of the activities that we had during the camp.

The rail is going to break at this rate.
